Public Works/Drain Office

The Public Works Commissioner is elected to a four year term. The Public Works Office, located in the Courthouse, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of approximately 900 open drains that total 1,800 miles and 300 drains that are partially enclosed that total 400 miles. This office is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of eight pump stations and four retention basins. The Public Works Commissioner administers the Michigan Drain Code and advises the public regarding practical and economical solutions relative to drain systems. 

The Public Works Commissioner also, in conjunction with the local municipalities, oversees construction of water supply systems, sewer collection systems, wastewater treatment facilities, sale of bonds and administers Part 91 of Act 451, the Michigan Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Act through the issuance of permits.
